BigBand Networks Selected by Keumkang Cable Networks to Provide Digital Media Center

Korean cable operator deploys BigBand BMR for advanced video processing

June 14, 2007

Jeju, South Korea, KCTA Conference, June 14, 2007—BigBand Networks, Inc., (NASDAQ: BBND), today announced that Korean cable operator Keumkang Cable Networks has deployed the Broadband Multimedia-Services Router (BMR®) to deliver digital television service. Keumkang purchased the equipment through BigBand’s Korean partner, Cudo Communications. Keumkang Cable is using the BigBand BMR as a “headend-in-a-box” to provide RateShaping®, scrambling, RF modulation and other functionality that would otherwise require multiple products from other vendors.

“We purchased and deployed the BigBand BMR based on the recommendations of other leading cable operators in Korea that have already experienced the benefits of integrating headend functionality in a single, compact unit,” said Mr. Ki-Sung, Heo, chief operating officer of Keumkang Cable. “We aren’t aware of another product that allows us to build a digital media center so easily and cost effectively.”

Keumkang Cable serves a large region southwest of Seoul, surrounding the Korean city of Iksan. The operator offers 110 channels of digital television, pay per view services and high-speed Internet.

“Partnering with BigBand Networks for the Keumkang Cable project offered Cudo Communications the best video solution to the demanding requirements of Keumkang Cable Networks,” said Mr. Jae-Hoon Shim, general manager of Cudo Communications in Korea. “For us, the BMR was a valuable video system solution from both a technology perspective, and long-term investment perspective, for the project.”

The Korean cable industry is one of the more advanced in the world; its operators offer a variety of digital video and IP services, and a wide range of content. The South Korean government recently announced the country’s plans to migrate to all-digital television services by 2012. The BMR’s versatility and wide range of supported solutions and services—including BigBand’s industry-leading switched digital video solution—can make it possible for Korean operators to expand digital and HDTV programming very cost-effectively.

“Keumkang’s network growth and rapid expansion of new services is a prime example of Korea’s advancements in cable technology,” said Rick Ford, vice president of the Asia Pacific region for BigBand. “The BigBand BMR is an excellent choice for Korean operators because it provides the rich set of video processing functionality needed today, and a migration path to more advanced services and industry-leading innovations, such as switched digital video.”

BigBand is demonstrating a range of technologies including its switched digital video solution—the most widely-deployed SDV solution in the world—in Booth A-3 at KCTA 2007.
